The Premier League is the most exciting league in the world, but thanks to polar opposite form from Manchester City and Manchester United in the last couple of months, the title race is as good as over, even if the soon-to-be-deposed champions look set to beat Newcastle United this weekend.
Over the last six games, the Red Devils have won maximum points and conceded just one goal, while City have won only two of their last six and sit 12th in the form table.Roberto Mancini’s men have only averaged a goal per game in that time as well, which is less than Wigan Athletic, QPR and Saturday’s visitors to the Etihad Stadium.Alan Pardew’s men have pulled away from a potential relegation fight since the turn of the year and following the purchase of half of Ligue 1 in January, they are actually two places ahead of City in the form table.
Newcastle have been consistently inconsistent since the start of
February, going from win to loss to win to loss. Seeing as their last
outing was a loss (to Wigan), you know what that means!
If you think the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse can triumph at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, then humongous odds of 8/1 will surely tempt you into an outside flutter.
There is also the possibility of a draw, with City tying three of their 14 home games this season, while Newcastle have finished all square in five of their 15 trips. A stalemate here can be backed at 17/4.
Having said that, Pardew’s side have lost their last three Premier League away games (at Tottenham, Swansea City and Wigan) and have not got a great record against City.They have not beaten the Citizens since September 2005 and have not even taken a point off them since October 2008.
City have won the last six meetings and despite the recent bumps in the road, they will fancy their chances of making it seven in this 3pm kick-off.Talismanic striker Sergio Aguero is expected to be back from injury, as is club captain Vincent Kompany, who has been out since January with a calf problem.Despite their perceived underachievement, Roberto Mancini’s men have the second best home record in the division, while Newcastle have the second-worst away record, with just one solitary win from 15 ventures outside St James’ Park.
Therefore, I have to put all of my Easter eggs in one basket and back Manchester City to win, even at the ‘poultry’ price of 3/10 (poultry… chicken… egg… oh never mind!).
But just to beef it out a bit, you might be more interested in a City win with a 0-1 handicap (so essentially, City to win by two or more goals) at odds of 87/100.
