PSG have huge financial muscle behind them and are through to the latter stages of the Champions League, where they play Barcelona in a quarter-final, with the first-leg taking place this week. Having spent heavily on the likes of Thiago Silva, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, PSG are seven points clear at the top of the French league.
Al-Khelaifi has spoken of his desire to build PSG into a dominant world football power and that he is in it for the long-haul, with ESPN claiming manager Carlo Ancelotti will be provided with an extravagant transfer budget this summer, and Al-Khelaifi would support the purchase of England international Rooney.
“He is a great player, one of the best strikers in the world,” Al-Khleaifi said. “I think everybody would like it to happen. But if you want to talk about the facts we have not approached him.”
There has been speculation this season about Rooney’s future at Old Trafford after he was left out of the starting line-up to play Real Madrid in the Champions League, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted Rooney will remain with United.
