Cuthbert Malajila's goal during Maritzburg United's 2-0 victory over struggling Chippa United on Sunday saw the Zimbabwean striker moving to just a single goal behind the League's leading scorer, Bernard Parker.Malajila has now scored 9 goals and moves to second place on the scorer's charts, together with Moroka Swallows' Katlego Mashego who has also scored the same number of goals.

Parker, who still leads the race with 10 goals, risks being overtaken as the League title race reaches the decisive stages. With both Malajila and Mashego breathing down the neck of the Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana striker, Lehlohonolo Majoro – who is on 8 goals – is not too far behind.
Five other strikers – Henrico Botes, Kingston Nkhatha, Lerato Manzini, Rodney Ramagalela and Welcome Qalanto – have scored 7 goals and will feel they are still in the race to win the coveted award.

Last season's top scorer award was won by Moroka Swallows' veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvete, who banged in a total of 20 League goals as he helped his club to a second place League finish.

Former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga predicts a tighter race this time around and is particularly impressed by Malajila's performance."For me Cuthbert Malajila has done very well and he is the kind of player that will score more goals next season," Masinga tells Reliable Click."But Kaizer Chiefs have shown that they have been very dominant this season. Not only are they on top of the log; three of their strikers [Parker, Majoro and Nkhatha] are all in with a chance to win the top scorer award.
"It will be interesting to see who wins this award because we are getting into the final stages of the League race."The fitness levels of the players will play a part in determining the eventual winner," adds Masinga, who played for Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns before embarking on a largely fruitful career in Europe.
