Kaduna frees 56 Zaria prison inmates

Zaria – Alhaji Garba Abubakar, the Comptroller of Prisons in Kaduna State, has said that 56 prisoners had been freed from the Zaria prison by the state government.

Abubakar shortly after the release of the inmates said that the gesture was aimed at decongesting prisons across the state.

“When I assumed duty as comptroller I told the state Governor that our prisons are truly congested and by the power bestowed on him he should look into the problem.

“I thank God, the governor accepted the initiative and constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the state Attorney-General, Justice Shehu Garba,” he said.

Also in an interview, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said the committee would visit all the 14 prisons in the state to carry out similar exercise.

“Going by the exercise carried out in Zaria, it implies that all cases against the 56 inmates were terminated,” he said.

On delay in dispensation of justice in Nigerian courts, the commissioner stressed the need for amendment of procedure rule for efficiency and effectiveness.
He appealed to the released inmates to repent and reform in order to be of good behaviour and useful to the society.

The commissioner also urged both the prison and judiciary staff to be committed and dedicated to their duties.
