Chelsea have lodged a surprise €20m offer with Turkish giants Fenerbahce for Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike and are ready to wrap a deal one of Europe's most quickest, if not unpredictable forwards once the World Cup concludes.
Emenike has spent less than 12 months with Fener after completing a late switch to Istanbul from Spartak Moscow last summer, but Turkish newspaper Fanatik is reported by the Metro to believe that Chelsea are chasing fresh strike cover in a move that has come completely out of the blue.
What about Costa?
Jose Mourinho still views Atletico Madrid marksman Diego Costa as his number one strike star for next season, with today's shock move for Emenike completely independent of that long-awaited deal, which is still expected to go through for a fee of £32m before the end of this week.
Chelsea still allowed veteran Samuel Eto'o to move on after deciding against an extension to his single season at Stamford Bridge, but Mourinho has still got Demba Ba and Fernando Torres on his books and the numbers simply don't add up at this stage.
Mourinho means business
Torres in particular has been at pains to insist he still has a first-team future at Chelsea, but the much-maligned £50m only scored five Premier League goals last season and will have to make do with a regular place on the bench next season, even more so if there's any substance to Chelsea's interest in Emenike.
Ba is definitely hoping to secure a switch away from West London in search of regular first-team football, but that may be a luxury Emenike has to give up to complete to take his place at Chelsea next season.
Is he good enough?
Emenike is currently strutting his stuff for Nigeria at the World Cup and has been a key figure in helping the Super Eagles qualify for the last 16, in particular breaking free to set up Peter Odemwingie for the crucial winner against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Cuiaba.
The 27-year-old also has a very favourable scoring record in Turkey over the last 12 months, scoring 12 times, but the Premier League represents a significant step up in quality and Blues fans will need some convincing he represents any significant improvement on their current options.
Fenerbahce are willing to make a very quick return on the £10m they invested in Emenike last summer, which gives Chelsea every chance of landing what looks to be a player primed as an impact substitute for £16m, ahead of a season in which Jose Mourinho simply has to deliver success.
