Drunk passenger attempts to open airplane door in flight

JULY 26, 2014

A man who drank vodka and beer to settle his nerves on his first ever flight tried to open the plane door because he thought it was a toilet.
Tomasz Mucha, 26, was on a Ryanair flight to Dublin when he made the drunken blunder as shocked passengers looked on.
The only thing that stopped him from opening the door at the rear of the plane was the air pressure, Dublin District Court heard.
The incident happened on a flight from Karkow to Dublin.
Mr Mucha, of no fixed address, admitted being drunk on the flight and using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour when charged with offences under the Air Navigation and Transport Act.
He was fined €200 after he told the court that he now realised how serious his actions were.
Garda Shaun Cafrrey told the court that he was called to Dublin Airport on July 11 after the plane touched down.
He then arrested Mucha after he was informed that he was drunk onboard and tried to open the aircraft’s door.
The court was told that the 26-year-old was drinking his own beer on the flight and moved towards the door to open it at 7.45pm. He was able to get the door handle up, but it didn’t open because the air pressure held it shut. Staff immediately brought Mr Mucha back to his seat. Garda Caffrey said Mucha was not aggressive on board the plane. The accused told the court, through an interpreter, that he was drinking alcohol before he got on the plane because it was the first time he had ever flown.
Judge James Faughnan asked the accused, “Do you realise how serious it could have been?” to which Mr Mucha replied, “Yes”.
