It's been confirmed - Arsenal set to smash transfer record once more

French newspaper L’Equipe are known for breaking the latest transfer news and footballing gossip, especially renowned for their coverage on compatriot Arsène Wenger’s side Arsenal.

Statistical Genius

Today, in a feature that has gone viral, they reveal with a series of statistical tools that suggest a strong positive correlation, with more money being spent every year by the Gunners hierarchy.

As can be seen in the graph below, the red line shows the increase in transfer expenditure every season in Wenger’s reign.

The report follows the manager’s comments on Saturday, in which he admitted that the club,

“need a goalkeeper for sure and after that it depends on how our midfielders get through without injuries until the start of the season.”

“Maybe at centre-back we’ll still bring one in.”

With the red curve on the rise again, coupled with Le Professeur’s remarks, rumours of impending record signings do not seem dumfounded.

Upward Spiral

It had not always been like this. The 2000/2001 season was originally the highest spending the clubs history, where the manager signed five players for a total of €63 million.

This was then broken in wake of Arsenal’s infamous 8-2 defeat to Manchester United in 2011, where €72 million was spent on players such as Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker.

The summer of 2013 was a shift from spending a lot of money on a lot of players, to instead focusing on buying ‘top, top quality’.

Arsène Wenger smashed the clubs transfer record with the signing of German international Mesut Özil for €56 million.

Encouraged By Intent

It has now got to the stage where Arsenal are spending more on players than they have sold others for. This will alarm the executive board, who maintain that stability is key in running such a successful football club.

However, supporters will be encouraged to see that Arsenal are serious about signing world class stars and L’Equipe’s findings suggest that this summer will continue the inclination of incoming transfers.

The arrivals of Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy have already set the tongues wagging.

With heavy rumours over Sami Khedira, William Carvalho, David Ospina, Lars Bender and Mario Balotelli, it looks as though this upward trend will continue. Hopefully resulting in a trophy at the end of the next campaign.
