Reports: Arsenal set to sign Southampton right-back Calum Chambers in £12m deal

Arsenal are on the verge of signing Southampton’s highly-rated young right-back Calum Chambers in a £16 million deal, according to the BBC.

The 19-year-old has only made 22 Premier League appearances, a record that makes the reported fee sound extravagant, but Arsenal believe the England under-19 international has the potential to become a regular at the Emirates.
Arsenal have already signed Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle this summer as a replacement for Bacary Sagna, but Arsene Wenger wanted another right-back as an alternative. Chambers will start the upcoming season as a back-up to the France international, though he will want to make the position his own in the long-term.
Chambers is another graduate of the Southampton academy, and he will follow Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in making the move from the Saints to Arsenal.
With the arrival of Chambers seemingly imminent, Carl Jenkinson is expected to leave Arsenal on loan to get valuable first-team experience, with West Ham favourites for Jenkinson’s signature.
Southampton have lost a number of their first-team players already this season. Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United in a £30 million deal, while Dejan Lovren is set to follow Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to Liverpool for a combined fee of £48 million. Arsenal are also interested in France midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, thoughSouthampton have put a £27 million price tag on his head to fend off interest from the Gunners and Spurs.
