WAEC cancels result 8 yrs after issuing certificate
A graduate of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, Olowoyeye Oluwanifesimi D. has petitioned the West African Examination Council (WAEC) over alteration of her Senior Secondary School Certificate result. Olowoyeye, who sat for her senior school certificate examinations (SSCE) in June 2008 with number 4140208099 and was awarded certificate by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wondered why there was alteration in her result posted online eight years after and urged the examination body to correct the error. Looked worried and confused, she told journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday that “Without WAEC correcting the error, I won’t be able to complete my clearance for mobilisation for National youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme for June and won’t be able to also collect my degree certificate in school.
“The development has already cost me the NYSC February mobilisation. I am therefore appealing to the WAEC management to intervene to save my future. I spent six years for a course I should have ordinarily spent four years. This is another burden and stress that WAEC is making me to go through due to an error by the examination body,” she said. Olowoyeye, who studied Geography/ Planning Science at EKSU, said she secured admission into EKSU with the result to study a course of her choice in 2009/2010 having recorded good grades in seven subjects as follows: Geography C4, English Language C6, Yoruba Language C5, Mathematics B3, Agricultural Science D7, Biology C5, Physics B3, Chemistry C4 and Economics C4. She lamented that the new result online released by WAEC had her Economics and Chemistry results cancelled leaving other seven subjects and scores as they were originally. According to her, the error was discovered when she checked her result online on January 4 this year for the purpose of her clearance as part of the conditions for the issuance of her B.Sc Certificate and mobilisation for the mandatory NYSC programme.
She said that following the discovery, she complained to WAEC national office at Yaba, in Lagos through letters by her lawyer dated January 15, 2016 and another letter dated January 18, 2016 written by the Proprietor of her former school, Our Saviour’s Standard College, Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, where she sat for the exam that earned her the scores, Mr. R.O. Ayotunde. The proprietor’s letter reads in part: “I hereby wish to bring to your notice that Olowoyeye Oluwanifemi D (a former student of Our Saviour’s Standard College) sat for WASSCE of May/June 2008 and she passed. Her registration number is 4140208099 and was issued a certificate number NGWASSCS 10327391. “During her final clearance at EKSU for NYSC mobilisation, the verification of the said result online indicated that Economics and Chemistry are cancelled. I wish you use your good offices to help us out and resolve the differences to make necessary correction online,” he stated. According to her, her plea and the letters had not received the necessary attention from WAEC since then.
But the WAEC’s Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu said he could not say exactly what could have responsible for the alteration of the result in question. He noted that there were many factors that could cause the development but refused to mention any of them as he would not want to pre-empt impending investigation on the matter. Ojijeogu however advised the affected candidate to write formally to the Head of National Office of the council in Lagos requesting (and not complaining) for the revalidation of her results. He said such letter would be expressly attended to by the council to enable the affected candidates wherever they may be know why and if possible revalidated the results after thorough investigation. He added that WAEC as a credible examination body would not joke with issues that concern its candidates and their results.
