Rashford played on the right-hand side of a five-man United midfield at Anfield, while Pogba started behind striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The world-record signing was poor on Monday evening, and there are still questions over his best position. 16 Conclusions also wonders whether Rashford has earned himself an opportunity to start as a striker.

Mourinho said post-match that he considered swapping him with Pogba, before the 18-year-old fell to cramp. He was later replaced by Wayne Rooney with a matter of minutes remaining.

“If you analyse the game see the reason why did it, playing Young and Fellaini,” he told BBC Sport. “We had control of the game – there were two amazing saves by David de Gea it’s true but they were out of context.

“The team was always comfortable, we lacked a little bit of sharpness in more attacking positions.

“There was a moment I thought about playing Rashford in the Pogba position behind Zlatan but then the kid had cramps.”

Mourinho also spoke about referee Anthony Taylor after the game, praising his performance.

“Can I speak about the referee without being punished?” he asked. “He had a good game and I am happy for him because people with responsibilities put a lot of pressure on him and it was very difficult for him to have a good performance, which he had.”
