Chelsea Linked With £30m Summer Coup Move for Unhappy Man United Striker Wayne Rooney

There is growing speculation that Wayne Rooney’s omission from Man United’s starting eleven against Real Madrid could result in the England international seeking an Old Trafford exit.
The Daily Express lists Chelsea among a host of clubs who could make a move for the £30m rated striker who is apparently unhappy about missing out on a spot in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team for such a crucial fixture.

Rooney has two seasons left on his current contract and six months shy of his 28th birthday and this source believes Man United could consider cashing in on one of their star performers.
Man City and PSG are also apparently monitoring the situation but it would be something of a surprise if Ferguson were to really consider selling Rooney.Whilst the former Everton man may not be plying a central striking role, with Robin Van Persie filling that role, Rooney is still clearly a crucial member of the Man United first team set-up and still scoring goals with regularity, as evidenced by his 11 goal return from 16 Premier League starts.Former Man United striker Michael Owen appears to believe that being dropped by Ferguson could well have knock-on effects, stating;

“It’s got to be a big worry for Wayne,” he said.
“It’s the biggest game of the season and the manager has shuffled his pack and not included him. A couple of years ago, if Wayne wasn’t the first-choice striker, he would have played him in left midfield or in behind the striker.”

                     Abramovich Applaud

Chelsea would be delighted to welcome a striker of Rooney’s calibre and Blues owner Roman Abramovich may well see the Man United man as the ideal replacement for flop Fernando Torres but one would have to question whether Ferguson would ever consider selling such a key player to a direct Premier League rival, something the Scot is well known for avoiding.Abramovich will want to make amends for what has been a poor season and could feel that the signing of a ‘Marquee’ signing or two would help in his pursuit of the Premier League title and a renewed push to reclaim the Champions League crown they are set to lose this May.A successful move to sign the Man United man would represent the coup of the summer and clearly a move to Stamford Bridge would be far easier to consider than a switch to Man United’s local rivals Man City.

A move to PSG could be hamstrung by the Ligue 1 side’s current financial commitments that could rule them out of making another big money bid, not least because any move to match Rooney’s reported £250k a week wages would prove problematic given France’s tough tax laws which would entail the club having to offer a huge sum just to meet the striker’s post-tax expectations.
Anyone who believes a Man United exit it unlikely need only recall a few short years ago when Rooney publicly stated his intention to leave the club, only on that occasion to be persuaded to remain at the club, with the help of a bumper new contract.

Given that Ferguson has the aforementioned Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck as possible striking options there is perhaps scope for the club feeling they could consider such a sale, though clearly any such exit would still be something of a surprise.Wayne Rooney has been a massive success since his move from Goodison Park to Man United in August 2004, making 393 appearances, including 41 from the bench, scoring 196 goals in the process. The Croxteth born forward is the club’s fourth highest goal-scorer of all time.
