Fernando Torres could return to Atletico Madrid when the window reopens.
The 29-year-old made a name for himself after developing through the youth system at the Vicente Calderon to establish himself as a key first team player. This led to a £20million move to Liverpool in the summer of 2007, and for a while, it looked as though the Premier League giants had landed themselves a bargain.
In January 2011, when Torres’ form had been on the wane for some time, he standing remained high enough for Chelsea to fork out a British record £50million to lure him to Stamford Bridge. The striker has failed to find anything like his best form in London, though, and this has led to speculation of an exit at the end of the season.
It has been claimed that the Blues could look to offload the Spanish international back to Atletico, as part of a deal which would see Colombian star Radamel Falcao move in the opposite direction. And Diego Simeone admits he would be interested in offering the striker a chance to kick-start his career in familiar surroundings.
“Fernando Torres is currently playing for another team. We have to wait for the season to finish and decide which of the available players could come here and do a good job,” the Atletico coach told Onda Cero. “Fernando knows about the club’s history, what it means to play here and I don’t need to speak about his ability. I know how important he can be.”
Knowing how deadly he was whilst at his peak at Anfield, it has become almost painful to watch Torres in recent times. He looks a beaten figure in the Chelsea shirt, with his brief glimpses of his former self swamped by the occasions he trudges around the pitch with the body language of a player who desperately needs to move on.
How much of the £50million Roman Abramovich could realistically recoup will be interesting to discover, with some reports over the past few weeks suggesting he could leave for as little as £15million. It may save face for the Chelsea owner, therefore, if the fee was built into a package for Falcao, who is regarded as one of the best strikers in world football.
