Manchester City's shortcomings in recent transfer windows has been cruelly exposed in recent weeks, as they trail city rivals Manchester United by 12 points in the race for the Premier League title, thanks largely to a lack of genuine quality in their ranks.With the exception of starlet Matija Nastasic, sources have suggested as many as 11 players could be heading for the Etihad exit this summer, with Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko, Samir Nasri and Gareth Barry at the head of the list.
Whilst Tevez, Barry and Joleon Lescott all have a year remaining on their contracts, Kolo Toure, Wayne Bridge and Roque Santa Cruz will all be out of contract and look set to be plying their trade elsewhere come the beginning of the 2013/14 season.Reports have suggested that Maicon and Scott Sinclair could be set for a premature exit, despite only signing for the Manchester outfit in 2012.Roberto Mancini has blamed City's failed attempt to defend their Premier League crown on the club's inability to land his primary transfer targets.
Eden Hazard, Robin van Perise, Daniele De Rossi, Daniel Agger and Javi Martinez have all been on Mancini's wishlist in windows gone by, yet all secured high-profile moves to the Citizens' rivals - with Van Persie arguably the difference between the two Manchester clubs this season.Brian Marwood, City's former director of football, shouldered the blame for their transfer failures, with Mancini publicly criticising the Premier League champions' transfer committee.
Speaking last August, Mancini said: "After four months, I don't know what to say. You need to ask Brian Marwood. I am not the sporting director. I can't say anything about players."
When asked if he was content with Marwood having the final say on the club's overall transfer policy, Mancini replied: "I am not happy - but I don't know what to say."
