The Federal Road Safety Corps,FRSC has succeeded in convicting about 231 drivers for road traffic offences during the nationwide Easter patrol.
A statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Jonas Agwu, in Abuja, on Sunday, said the offenders were convicted by mobile courts for various traffic-related offences in Kwara, Edo, Osun, Jigawa and Ekiti states.While reacting to the convictions, Agwu said the courts were usually established by the corps during special patrols at strategic routes of the highways, for prompt handling of road traffic violations, as part of the initiatives to engender best road practices among motorists.
He added that some traffic offences attracted jail terms, especially when the offender failed to meet up with the fines.Agwu reiterated the warning of the commission for motorists to comply with traffic rules and regulations, especially during the Easter celebrations.
Details showed that the offenders were convicted due to speed violation, dangerous driving, overloading, tyre and seat belt violations. They said that out of the 246 offenders arraigned, only 14 of them were set free.
