Joey Barton has apologised for branding Thiago Silva ‘a lady boy’ on Twitter after his club Paris Saint-Germain threatened legal action. The on-loan QPR man started an online battle with Silva this week after the Brazil international told the French press he didn’t know anything about Barton and had no idea who he was.
Barton didn’t take the comments lightly, and poked fun at the defender’s injury problems on Twitter calling him ‘fat’ and ‘overrated’.The jibes continued 24 hours later when he called Silva ‘a lady boy’, but after PSG hinted they were ready to launch legal action over the comments, Barton issued an apology.
In a statement on Marseille’s official website, the Ligue 1 club said they and Barton apologise for the ‘inappropriate’ comments about Silva and stress that the player has been warned against abusing fellow professionals.
‘Olympique de Marseille and Joey Barton are keen to apologise to Thiago Silva and his club for the inappropriate behaviour by the English player on social networks during the past thirty-six hours,’ said the statement.
‘The management asked Joey Barton put an end to the controversy which opposed the Brazilian defender of PSG, and the midfielder has pledged to immediately cease the posting of any derogatory comments.’
