Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently seventh, seven points behind fourth-place Chelsea, having played a game more, with local rivals Everton and Arsenal leading the chase to gatecrash the Champions League places. The Toffees are four points short of Chelsea while the Gunners are two points behind.
Liverpool beat Aston Villa on Easter Sunday after coming from a goal down for the first time in the league this season, with Gerrard scoring the match-winning penalty. But their previous Premier League game, also away at another of the division’s lower-ranked teams, Southampton, saw Liverpool lose 3-1.
Gerrard counted the defeat to the Saints - as well as a home loss to Villa - as part of the reason why Liverpool were not more involved in the Champions League race. He said: “We know what our problem is and it’s inconsistency. In the majority of games we’ve played well enough to be higher than where we are in the league.
“But when you look at performances like Southampton, Villa at home, West Brom away, Arsenal at home, there’s a handful of games where this team hasn’t turned up. That’s the reason why we are sitting where we are in the table.”
