Some football Fans in Lagos on Friday supported the ban placed on Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez by FIFA at the ongoing World Cup finals in Brazil.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Suarez had bitten an Italian defender, Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder during the match between Italy and Uruguay on June 24.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee had on June 26 announced a nine-match suspension with immediate effect and also banned the player from any football activity for four months.
The fans who spoke to NAN described Suarez behaviour on the pitch as unacceptable and unsportsmanlike.
Emmanuel Ebitimi, a student, described the player’s action as disgraceful which was not good for the image of the sport.
Ebitimi noted that the player ought to have been punished long before now, having done a similar thing in the past.
“Honestly, what Suarez did that day on the pitch was a disgrace to him and his country,” he said.
Ayodele Aina, a viewing centre operator, described the decision as one of the best ever taken by FIFA in recent times.
Aina said that the decision would serve as warning to other players who display bad habits during football matches.
“I’m not always in support of the decision taken by FIFA most times, but on this issue, FIFA has taken the right step.
“This will also send signal to other players to desist from terrible habits when playing,” he added.
In the same vein, Charles Edem, a banker, said that the player should have been suspended from sporting activity for one year.
Edem noted that if given such punishment, Suarez would realise the gravity of his action.
“FIFA should have come down hard on the player. May be a one year ban will change his orientation,” he said.
However, Bayo Emmanuel, a salesman, said that the ban on the player was too harsh, saying that what Suarez needed most was psychological help.
“This suspension and fine will not change his person. What Suarez needs is a psychological evaluation to help change his mentality,” Emmanuel said.
