It is increasingly important that developments in science, medicine and technology are efficiently communicated to enable individuals to have an informed opinion on many issues. Delivered jointly by Northumbria University and the International Centre for Life this high profile partnership delivers a course which encompasses both academic and practical components providing a balanced technical and theoretical programme aimed at maximising outreach and public engagement work in science.
Teaching and Learning
The course is taught by experienced academics and professional science communicators utilising the expertise within Northumbria University and the expertise and experience of professional staff from the Centre for Life. As well as understanding the historical, political and scientific context of modern public engagement with science, students will receive an excellent grounding in developing and staging science shows, creating exhibitions, running major public engagement events and delivering successful education programmes.
The course is taught by experienced academics and professional science communicators utilising the expertise within Northumbria University and the expertise and experience of professional staff from the Centre for Life. As well as understanding the historical, political and scientific context of modern public engagement with science, students will receive an excellent grounding in developing and staging science shows, creating exhibitions, running major public engagement events and delivering successful education programmes.
Students will gain a broad but informed knowledge base to improve current conveyance of scientific knowledge as well as develop their transferable skills which are pivotal to communicating science across a range of settings, including; information retrieval; collation and evaluation; critical awareness; problem solving; project and time management; IT skills, presentation skills; logical and lateral thinking skills; independent and reflective learning skills.
Full-time and Part-time Routes
The course, which can be studied full-time over 1 year or part-time over 2 yearsand is delivered by lectures, seminars and tutorials. The course is taught by experienced university academics and professional science communicators from the International Centre for Life and will be delivered partly at Northumbria University as well as the International Centre for Life. This unique learning environment will allow students to gain hands-on experience right at the heart of the science communication community.

Employment opportunities in Public Engagement with Science are diverse and graduates of this course will be in demand in both the private and public sector. Careers may be in public engagement and science communication but also in community outreach, clinical research and consultancy, as educational information officers, engagement managers and in a range of workplaces such as academic institutions, science centres, museums, science education centres, research councils, health related charities and private companies. Graduates from the programme will be in demand to bridge the gap between science and society.

Entry Requirements
Students should have 2.2 or above BSc degree from a UK or equivalent overseas university to train as a professional science communicator. All students must be proficient in written and spoken English. Therefore overseas students whose first language is not English must be able to provide evidence that they have an acceptable English Language qualification such as IELTS with a minimum of 6.5 in each element or equivalent qualification. (Original test certificates must be produced as photocopies are not acceptable). Evidence of personal activity in public engagement with science communication should be demonstrated in the personal statement of the application. All students will have to undergo DBS clearance (previously CRB) due to the public engagement activity throughout the Masters programme and this will be coordinated by the International Centre for Life.
