Nigerian pop star Adokiye Kyrian, known by her stage name Adokiye, has expressed a wish to trade herself for the freedom of more than 200 schoolgirls who are still in the custody of Islamist militant group Boko Haram, after they were kidnapped in April.
In a recent interview with Vanguard, a Nigerian daily newspaper, the 23-year-old Adokiye expressed her concern for the girls, who were kidnapped from a secondary school in the remote northeastern village of Chibok on April 14. The mass abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls, some of whom subsequently escaped, triggered a campaign using the Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurGirls supported by many, including Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and U.S. First lady Michelle Obama.
Adokiye is the latest celebrity to join the campaign demanding the girls' release.
"Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them. It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange,” Adokiye said. “They are between 12 and15 year old girls for Christ sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to12 men have to take me every night, I don’t care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents.”
Adokiye’s offer was praised by some social media users, while others criticized her saying that she was merely seeking public attention.
