Nigerian student’s body found in New York river
The
body of 17-year-old Nigerian girl, Omotayo Adeoye, resident in New
York, United States, who killed herself about one week ago after she was
openly scolded by her teacher for cheating in an examination has been
found.
Unable to comprehend and handle the
shame and embarrassment caused by the development, Adeoye, a student of
High School of Math, Science and Engineering in Manhattan, one of New
York’s posh academic institutions, decided to jump into a river than
face humiliation.
Described as a very brilliant
schoolgirl, Adeoye left behind a stunning but short suicide not before
committing the act. “I just want to go away forever on the bottom of the
river,” the note read. The news had since thrown her entire family into
mourning.
According to New York Police Department,
her body was found floating on water after nearly a one-week manhunt in
different parts of the city. NYPD’s Harbor Unit near the spot of the
sad event helped retrieved Adeoye’s body from the river.
Heartbroken family members are still
awaiting the release of her body pending the outcome New York’s Medical
Examiner investigation into the cause and circumstances surrounding the
death.
A promising and brilliant young lady,
the 17-year-old is now the 14th pupil in New York’s public school system
to commit suicide this academic year, according to education
authorities in the state.
