The UKs leading fusion research organisation based near Oxford has scientists and engineers working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow's power stations.
The Engineering Implementation Department designs, procures commissions, operates and maintains the wide range of devices used on the JET Tokamak.
The Remote Handling Unit is responsible for operating and maintaining the remote handling equipment, comprising a wide range of electromechanical devices. This equipment is used for maintenance and the implementation of enhancements of the JET Tokamak. The Unit is also active in the design and development of Remote Handling equipment and tools in support of fusion reactors of ITER and Demo.
The Organisation is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop, commission, test, maintain and operate tools and equipment for these Remote Handling operations.
Key responsibilities include:
*The creation and design of effective remote handling mechanical robotic devices and tooling from concept through systems specifications to detail designs
*Supervision of engineers and draughtsman to maintain high design standards and integrate design work
*Liaison with customers to report of project progress and to agree priorities
*Project management of design projects within budgetary and schedule limits
*Controlling the acceptance, testing and commissioning of systems
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
*Engineering council recognised mechanical engineering degree
*Competence in mechanism design and experience in actuator selection
*Competence in design substantiation analysis using hand calculation and finite element techniques
*Competence in the generation of technical documents
*Experience with 3D CAD system
*Ability to co-operate and work as a part of a larger team or group
Desirable
*Membership of a Professional Engineering Institution
Special Requirements
*You will be required to occasionally work in Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas, which will involve wearing Personal Protective Equipment. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided. You will also occasionally be required to be on a scheduled call out roster
