Further information
Celgene is a global biopharmaceutical company leading the way in medical innovation to help patients live longer, better lives. Our purpose as a company is to discover and develop therapies that will change the course of human health. We value our passion for patients, quest for innovation, spirit of independence and love of challenge. With a presence in more than 70 countries - and growing - we look for talented people to grow our business, advance our science and contribute to our unique culture.
Summary/Scope
Celgene seeks a talented, results and achievement oriented individual to contribute to our bioinformatics and data management initiatives in Research and Early Development (R&ED). This hands-on role interfaces with programs both in discovery research and translational development where processing and interpreting multi-platform and multi-dimensional ‘omic’ data in pre-clinical and clinical settings is being employed to identify molecular drug targets, characterize MOA, prioritize clinical indications and generate patient selection hypotheses. We are seeking an individual with extensive experience in managing, processing, integrating and mining a wide range of internally generated, proprietary data sets, CRO and collaboration generated data and public databases while working in close collaboration with research and translational scientists to analyze and interpret results.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide direct support to R&ED scientists to provide insight into optimal experimental design and data structure in support of study objectives
• Act as subject matter expert on global public bioinformatics data resources including current available public resources, best modes for accessing public resources and best methods for managing and mining data relevant to the question at hand
• Act as subject matter expert with analysis tools and resources such as Emboss; GCG; BioPerl, ClustalW, BLAST/BLAT/FASTA, NCBI Toolkit, JMP, Spotfire, SAS, Miner, NCBI, GEO, GO, HapMap, and TCGA, including data visualization tools
• Lead effort to understand, manage, organize and integrate low dimensional data with ‘omics and other platform data to support analyses leading to project decision making
• Provide expertise in the assay development and validation process, including defining experiments required and managing data associated with assay development
• Lead effort to incorporate assay design into laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and manage analytical data in the context of clinical trials
• Support rapid, efficient ad hoc searches for R&ED scientists who need to query and interpret public data mining results that inform internal program decision making processes
• Provide advice and direction to scientists, analysts and study teams needing bioinformatics input on best available public data sets and methods of interpreting mined results
• Actively contribute to Celgene’s R&ED Data Assets initiative to build Celgene-specific knowledge collections for cell lines, animal models and drug compounds based on internal and external genomic, proteomic, transcriptional and epigenetic assay data
• Help create scalable, streamlined data mining analysis workflows for effectively to support target characterization and non-clinical/clinical biomarker discovery
• Must have proven ability to work effectively as a multi-disciplinary team member or lead partnering with laboratory and clinical scientists, data management and IT support functions to add value to drug discovery and early development programs
Experience and Education
• Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years experience in bioinformatics, computational science, computational biology, integrative genomics, genetics or related discipline. A minimum of 7 years of hands-on genomic and/or proteomic data mining experience with an emphasis on human, primate or rodent organisms and model systems, required. Intimate familiarity with global public ‘omic’ data resources as well as experience accessing and mining the same, including visualization and analysis tools required.
• Experience with common genomic, proteomic and next generation sequencing platforms, data set structures, analysis methods, analysis tools and computational strategies required
• Strong understanding of LIMS systems and systematic, relational approaches to data integration and data processing workflows
• Excellent skills in SAS and R programming and experience in additional computer languages such as Perl, Python, PHP, S-PLUS or Java (or C/C++)
• Working knowledge of both Windows and Linux operating systems is required
• Along with programming proficiency must have creativity, and show a strong capacity for independent thinking and the ability to think about underlying biological questions
• Must be capable of understanding and translating high-level scientific goals into concrete computational approaches
• Prefer candidates familiar with a range of analysis pipelines and effective data handling methods for next generation sequence technology data sets
• Prefer candidates familiar with non-clinical biostatistical analysis and design of experiment methods
• Training in molecular biology with experience in oncology and immunity/inflammation is a plus
• Must thrive a complex, busy environment while adapting to dynamically changing priorities
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
Must have excellent time management and organizational skills
