Xavi Hernández is on the verge of cutting his ties with Barcelona in order to join New York City, where he will link back up with David Villa. The midfielder and Barça are currently thrashing out a payoff package to rescind the remaining two years on his contract and offset the wage drop he will be taking by leaving the Camp Nou.
The two parties have set a Wednesday deadline to reach a final agreement, as otherwise Xavi would have to report back for training together with the squad's other internationals on Thursday. The passmaster decided to bring his time at the 'Azulgranas' to a close after a frank discussion with new Barça boss Luis Enrique, who told him that he could expect a bit-part role at the club this coming season.
Rafa Márquez: Mathieu not Barça material
On a different note, former Barcelona player Rafa Márquez has heaped scorn on the credentials of Valencia centre-back Jérémy Mathieu, whom the 'Azulgranas' have submitted a bid for. "Mathieu doesn't have the profile to play for Barça. At that price, they should think twice", the Mexican told Catalan radio station 'RAC1'.
