Arsenal’s move for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema is ‘on’, with the Gunners offering around £45million to land the Frenchman, according to Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Emanuele Giulianelli.
The Italian reporter, via his official Twitter, confirmed the deal is set to go ahead, with Real Madrid to decide imminently whether to accept the offer on the table.
Benzema netted 15 goals and bagged 10 assists in La Liga last time out as Los Blancos fell short in their pursuit of the league title, finishing just two points behind Luis Enrique’s Barcelona.
The only player at Arsenal to outscore Benzema in the league last season was Alexis Sanchez. The summer addition from Barcelona racked up an impressive 16 goals in his debut Premier League campaign, notching up eight assists along the way.
Pressure mounted on Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to enter the transfer market after his side’s 2-0 home defeat at the hands of West Ham on the opening weekend of the season.
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is the club’s only addition so far this summer, and the 33-year-old had a debut to forget after being at fault for both goals in an afternoon to forget for the North Londoners.
