African Nations Cup star on the verge of joining Arsenal

Nigeria international Godfrey Oboabona is currently undergoing a trial at Arsenal as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his defence before the next season.
Oboabona came into the limelight in last month’s Africa Cup of Nations as Nigeria went on to win the tournament, most impressively beating favourites Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals. The centre-back played the full 90 minutes in all of their games in the competition, prompting Wenger to take a closer look at the player.

The 22 year-old plays for Nigerian outfit Sunshine Stars and the club rate the promising defender at £1 million. The Sun revealed that Arsenal are giving the defender a shot after his impressive displays for the national side.Oboabona is also keen on making the cut as he said, “Arsenal are my favourite club from childhood. It is the club I want to play for.”While Arsenal fans will no doubt appreciate the signing of an up and coming player, they will hope that Wenger’s defensive reinforcements do not end at Oboabona. The manager has a massive transfer budget for the summer and should Oboabona make the switch, he is likely to be joined by some serious competition in the defensive role.
