Chelsea and Liverpool are set to miss out on the signing of Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao

Portuguese star set to be used as make-weight in deal for Edinson Cavani.

Premier League sides including Chelsea and Liverpool are set to miss out on the signing of Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao according to talkSport. The Portuguese defender has found himself out of favour at the Bernabeu with his attacking instincts considered too risky to play behind left-winger Cristiano Ronaldo.Coentrao remains highly-rated though and a number of top European sides were said to be monitoring his situation. They all look set to miss out on the player’s signature however with reports emerging that the Spanish giants intend to use Coentrao as a make-weight in a deal to sign Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan striker is currently top scorer in Serie A and is being chased by the likes of PSG and Manchester City but it is thought that a huge bid would be necessary to persuade Napoli to part ways with the player. It has been suggested that Napoli are holding out for £54 million for Cavani but Real Madrid are unwilling to meet that asking price. They are instead seeking to offer a package involving £35 million plus Fabio Coentrao, who signed for the club from Benfica for £26.4 million in 2011.
The Serie A side are thought to be willing to consider such a deal and a move could go through this summer.
