Rafa Benitez praised Fernando Torres' team-work, after he suffered a bloody nose against Steaua

Benitez said: “It was important for Fernando to score – and the main thing is that it was important for the team. He has been working very hard and training really well, scoring a lot in training. I knew he was close. Now I hope it will be first of many for him.”

Benitez added that he was not worried about Torres’s penalty miss, saying: “Fernando was one of three designated penalty-takers. It depends how they feel, I leave it to them to decide.

“He had the confidence to take the responsibility and that was good. We can still be pleased with him even though he missed, because he has more confidence – and that is positive for the team and for him. This was a great victory against a very good team.”

Rafa Benitez :Chelsea will learn today who they face next when the draw is made in Nyon. But they know they face a major fixture pile-up after the international break, with six matches over 16 days.

“We will try to manage the fixtures,” said Benitez. “The idea is one game at a time. The next is always the most important.

“I prefer this problem because it means we are still competing. We have played nine games a month ever since I have been here. But we have confidence in the players.”
