Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz is officially the
most prolific goalscorer in the Champions League this season, more
clinical than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, according to the
Daily Mail.
The Barcelona and Real Madrid stars have dominated football headlines for a number of years, as two of the game's greatest ever players continue to battle - both domestically and in Europe - in a bid to be crowned the world's best.
Messi has finished top goalscorer in Europe's elite club competition for a record four consecutive seasons, but his place at the top of the Champions League pile comes under threat this year from a relatively unknown Turkish rival.
Yilmaz scored his eighth Champions League goal in Galatasaray's 3-2 victory over Schalke on Tuesday evening, to send him top of the charts based on number of goals per minutes played, to help the Turkish champions confirm their place in the 2012/13 quarter-finals.
On the same night, Messi become the second-highest goalscorer in Champions League history with his first of two goals against AC Milan, that completed a dramatic 3-2 aggregate turnaround at Camp Nou.
Naturally, the Argentine's contribution to Barca's latest European triumph was lauded by the media, while over in Germany a €5million summer signing went quietly about his business for Gala.
The journeyman striker has enjoyed spells at Besiktas, Trabzonspor, and Fenerbahce, prior to arriving at the Turk Telekom Arena in the summer, but is yet to test himself outside of Turkey.
If Yilmaz maintains his fine goalscoring form, it won't be a surprise to see him on the radar of a number of top European clubs when the transfer window reopens in July.
But, for now, lets enjoy the 27-year-old's achievement, as he continues to mix it with the continents greatest marksmen in the game today. Check out the top 10 Champions League goalscorers in 2012/13 below.
