Liverpool are already looking to reinforce for next season, with goalkeeper Pepe Reina the first to be replaced, according to Talksport. The Anfield club are looking to begin a brave new era and Brendan Rodgers is looking to rebuild from the back.
Reina’s rumoured replacement is little-known Mexican number one Guillermo Ochoa of French Ligue 1 team AC Ajaccio. Twenty-seven year-old Ochoa has certainly impressed at international level, with him representing Mexico fifty times already in his career.Ochoa was purchased by the Corsican islanders Ajaccio upon promotion to Ligue 1 in 2011, where the club finished in a respectable 16th position. This season, Ajaccio sit in 13th place, five points above the relegation zone with ten games left to play. But Ochoa himself has put his future up in the air by saying:
My future? I think about finishing the season in the best possible way, then I will compare options. However, I cannot deny that I would love to play in other leagues. I want to develop and join a major project.”Certainly, Liverpool are a team that would be considered a ‘major project’. Since joining in the summer of 2012, manager Brendan Rodgers has radicalised the way in which the Reds play their football.
Gone are the days of everything running through Steven Gerrard, with the 32 year-old having the burden eased on him somewhat this season thanks to the talismanic qualities of Luis Suarez. Rodgers prefers his teams to play a quick passing at a high tempo, leading to the Anfielders making an outside push for a Champions League berth by winning their last three matches.
Despite a distinct improvement in his form in the last few months, Reina could be the first out of the exit door this summer. The former Barcelona trainee has lacked an assertiveness and confidence this season, prompting Rodgers to look for a new man between the posts.
With club legend Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of the season, Rodgers is going to have to rebuild well to have Liverpool back competing for honours once again.
