Andre Villas Boas couldn't be shut up after the game last night and was seemingly happy to speak to anyone who asked. He was probably full of nervous energy after the slightly mental match his team had just played out, and the Italian press is full of soundbites from him and we covered a juicy snippet about the Chelsea dressing room last night. There was also a lot of Gareth Bale talk and it would be quicker to list the obvious things he didn't say about Bale than cover all his quotes about the Welshman.
The Tottenham manager covered all bases but seemed to be confident that the club can keep hold of their star, who was such a loss for them last night, as long as they qualify for the Champions League. Gareth Bale has been linked with moves to all the obvious destinations and it's certainly a newspaper shifter, and a website hit generator, so is likely to continue to irritate Tottenham fans for some time yet.Villas Boas is quoted by Calcio 24 as saying "The permanence of the best players is closely linked to the club's future plans and objectives that can be achieved, so we hope that the team qualifies for the Champions League and that we will grow.
"It's difficult for us to retain a player of his quality but it is difficult for other teams to take him, considering the global economic situation . At the moment we are very lucky to have him, I think we can keep him in the team if we reach our goals. The Champions League is the top competition for a club and preferred by players, so we care because this would allow us to keep team's best players."
So, according to Andre Villas Boas, it will be hard for Tottenham to keep hold of the Welshman and also hard for any other club to buy him. That's all bases covered then!
