Jose Mourinho will bring Marco Materazzi with him to Chelsea as his assistant manager should he return to Stamford Bridge, according to reports.
The Express claims the former Italian defender, who once had a loan spell in the Premier League with Everton, will be given the job of Mourinho’s number two.According to the newspaper, Mourinho is also planning to bring Cristiano Ronaldo with him from Real Madrid for £60million, so it appears he is already making plans for his potential return to Chelsea.Materazzi and Mourinho enjoyed an extremely close relationship when the latter was in charge at Inter Milan and the former was one of his defenders.
Tears
The pair won the Champions League together in their player-coach relationship, as well as two Serie A titles and a Coppa Italia. After Inter won the Champions League in 2010 and Mourinho announced to the team he was leaving, the pair embraced and both were moved to tears as they said goodbye.
Materazzi is best known as the man head-butted by Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France, which the defender’s team won on penalties.Current Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez was involved in a war of words with Materazzi earlier this year, something which could endear the Italian to Blues fans.According to the Daily Mail, Benitez called Materazzi a liar 10 times in an interview.
Weak
This was after the former defender had said of his time working under the Spaniard at Inter in 2010, according to the newspaper: “If I was president of a club, I would not trust him with my team.”
He also labelled Benitez “weak” and claimed he took down pictures of his predecessor Mourinho at Inter’s training ground.Benitez denied the claims and called Materazzi a liar, adding: “In Italy everyone knows Materazzi and everyone at Inter knows him – he’s a liar. He’s lying.
“He’s lying. He’s lying, just lying. Everything he has said is a lie.
“What he said about Mourinho is not true. Nobody knew Mourinho was leaving (in 2010) and no-one knew the Inter position would become available.
“I don’t know about the locker room, so it’s a lie. If you talk about lies, then he is a liar.
“I’ve spoken to his family and they told me I had to understand him so I want to respect him and be nice – but everyone knows him.
“He cannot discredit anyone because everyone knows him. Forget about him – it’s a lie. Simple.”
The newspaper claims that Materazzi hit back, telling Italian TV: “So I’m a liar?
“He’s thin then, so that gives reason to call me a liar.
“It pains me to say good luck to Chelsea but I will anyway, I feel sorry for their fans.”
