Police kill pregnant woman

A policeman on Tuesday evening allegedly shot dead a pregnant woman in Akure, Ondo State.
Our correspondent learnt that the incident occurred around 6pm when the policeman, who was attached to the Ijapo police post, allegedly demanded a N20 bribe from the driver of a cab conveying the woman to her destination.

Eyewitnesses said the driver who was heading for the Akoko area of the state in a Nissan Almera car with number plate, Ondo KAA 80 AAA, refused to meet the demand of the policeman for a bribe.
The furious policeman allegedly fired a shot which pierced through the car and hit the pregnant woman sitting in the front of the car.

The woman was confirmed dead at a government hospital where she was rushed to.

The source said, “The policeman took to his heels after sensing the gravity of his action and to avoid the wrath of the people around.“The angry mob, however, went to the station, made a bonfire and consequently destroyed the police post.”

Armed mobile policemen drafted to the police post on Wednesday prevented journalists from taking pictures of the police post destroyed by the angry mob.The state Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, said the officer had been dismissed.
