A woman who stopped to help ducks on a highway near Montreal was found guilty of causing the deaths of a motorcyclist and his passenger daughter who crashed into her car.
According to Newser, on Friday, a jury unanimously agreed that Emma Czornobaj’s actions of stopping for the ducks caused the fatal crash.
The 25-year-old was found guilty of two counts ofcriminal negligence causing death, which carries a life sentence. She was also convicted on two counts of dangerous driving causing death, which comes with a maximum of 14 years in prison.
The verdict was announced almost four years to the day that the 50-year-old Andre Roy and his 16-year-old daughter Jessie died.
WGHP noted that Czornobaj’s attorneys repeatedly argued that what happened was a tragic accident and that their client did not use any ill will and that there were no drugs, alcohol or speeding involved. They may appeal the decision.
Czornobaj was released until her sentencing hearing on Aug. 8.
