On Thursday 10th July 2014, the Hanatu Victor Ochei Spelling Bee came to a great end with Misan Afinotan of Graceville College Asaba Oshimili south LGA of Delta state emerging as the 2014 winner.
He walked home with the winning title and grand prize of N350,000; while 1st place runner up Jah’slight Eyiyere of Ufoma Royal School Oleh, Isoko South LGA, Delta state went home with N250,000 and 2nd runner up Bolanle Akinduntire of Dayspring Christian College, Delta state Central region left with a cash prize of N100,000.
Guests present at the event include the wife of the Executive Governor, Delta state, Her Excellency Deac. Roli Uduaghan, Nelly Utuama (wife of the Deputy Governor, Delta state), Prof. Patrick Muoboghare (Hon. Commissioner for Education), Barr. Joan Ganagana (Wife, Deputy Speaker, Delta State), Dr. Mrs. Ashiedu (Hon, Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation), Betty Efekodah (Hon. Commissioner for Women Affairs), Ifeanyi Osuaza (Hon. Commissioner for Project Monitoring), Hon. Joan Mrakpor (A Member of the Delta State House of Assembly), Boma Daubry, Campaign Preyor and more.
At the event, Her Excellency Deac. Roli Uduaghan applauded the efforts of the HVO founder, Hanatu Victor Ochei for putting the spelling bee together which she said will bring back the competitive spirit in school children. She also commended the public school students and their teachers for making it to the finals.
Precious Uvoh-Gideon of Ada Irri Secondary School in Isoko south LGA, Delta state (one of the three contestants from public schools) got cash reward of N100,000 from Comrade Emmanuel Igbini for her outstanding performance. The finalist all went home with a brand new laptop from HVO spelling bee and N20,000 while their teachers were rewarded for the extra efforts in coaching the students.
Hanatu Victor Ochei commended the contestants for the steadfastness and doggedness and urged them to believe in themselves no matter the outcome of the competition saying “you are all winners having made it thus far”.
